From the rolling hills of Southern Ohio, to the rolling waters of Lake Erie,
Ohio is a beautiful state with many attractions to offer.

The links below focus on my Ohio hometown(s).

OH-MAP.gif (2228 bytes)This map shows you the general location of my hometown(s) if you're unfamiliar with Jefferson and Erie Counties.

This site gives a brief description of Jefferson County Ohio.

The City of Steubenville has an official web page, as well as an unofficial visitor page where you can see the murals which are on various buildings downtown...

Wintersville also has its own space on the Net. Learn about the history and culture of this Ohio Village.

Steubenville has been dubbed the "City of Murals." Click here for a map of the murals in Steubenville.

Nial Pashke has created a great site devoted to Steubenville and the surrounding communities. Be sure to stop by and see his Ohio Valley Internet Directory and follow the link to Mingo Jct., "the hottest town on the Internet." My dad is from Mingo Jct., and he can vouch for the place. If anyone is ever in the Jefferson County area, be sure to make a late night stop at Paddy's Diner on Commercial Street, south of downtown Mingo! (Try their hot roast beef sandwich with gravy fries + a chocolate milkshake = EXCELLENT).

TowerCam9 is located 2000 feet above sea level and posts an aerial view photo each hour of the greater Steubenville area (or of Wheeling, WV down river).  Click here to see a sample photo of downtown Steubenville on a spring morning.

Steubenville news media includes WSTV radio, WTOV 9 television, and the Herald Star newspaper

Just across the river from Steubenville is the city of Weirton, West Virginia.

Below are a few links to web sites of the various Ohio schools and institutions I have attended. I have also included a few alumni oriented links.

Steubenville Catholic Central High School

A photo of the ol' Alma Mater taken by yours truly.

Nial Pashke has a site devoted to CCHS as well.

To date, I've seen a few different pages where CCHS alums can sign in and register e-mail addresses for other friends from high school to find. Each page is unique and different people have signed in on different pages. If you want others to find you, why not sign in on all of them? And pass the word on to other friends who have e-mail access!  If you've seen other alumni pages devoted to CCHS that I do not have linked here, please pass them along.

The Franciscan University of Steubenville

The University of Toledo, College of Law

You can find more information about the city of Toledo at ToledoWeb.

And for a good place to eat in Toledo, visit Tony Packo's.

Here are some other places I enjoy visiting in person. If you ever make it to Ohio, consider visiting one or more of these attractions.

Sauder Village is located about an hour west of Toledo in Archbold, Ohio. This 19th century farm and craft village is a great place to spend an afternoon! There are many activities and events scheduled throughout the season for both young and old to enjoy. On a visit there I toured the museum which was filled with antiques of everything imaginable. The museum displays the progression of various types of tools and machinery: automobiles, farm equipment and tools, photography equipment, stoves and heating sources, and much more.  You name it! If it was used in the household, it's in the Sauder Museum. HIGHLY recommended and well worth the price of admission!

I've never been there, but a past visitor to my web site recommended a visit to Hale Farm & Village: a living history museum in Bath, Ohio, north of Akron.  This place is on my "to go to" list.

Maumee Bay State Park is located east of Toledo in Oregon, Ohio, and is a beautiful place to enjoy the water of Lake Erie and the wildlife of the nearby wetlands! If you visit the Bay, be sure to take a walk on the boardwalk through the wetlands teeming with wildlife, and visit the nature center near the boardwalk.  Many people also enjoy swimming, fishing, biking, roller blading and kite flying at this popular state park.  For those who would like to enjoy the many activities available at this beautiful recreation area over a period of a few days, the park includes both lodging extremes: a campground for those who like to rough it and a waterfront resort hotel for those who like to be pampered with all the amenities.

I have posted a few photographs from Maumee Bay and the Boardwalk.

Crane Creek State Park is located on Ohio State Route 2 between Toledo and Sandusky. It's a wonderful place to visit if you enjoy bird watching, but it that's not for you (I'll admit that it's not one of my hobbies), there is a fine beach and shelter area with many other activities to enjoy. The park also offers the Sportsmen's Migratory Bird Center, which displays native wildlife species and information about the area. An observation platform near the Bird Center offers a unique perspective of the surrounding terrain.

Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge is near Crane Creek on Ohio State Route 2, with miles of hiking trails and beautiful scenery. If you visit, don't forget to bring your camera.

I can't seem to find the time much anymore, but I like to do a little bit of fishing and camping whenever possible. A few places back home I enjoy visiting for these activities are Austin Lake, Fernwood State Forest, Jefferson Lake, and Friendship Park. (There are no web sites available for this small park, but I have posted a few photographs of Friendship Park, which is also home to the Jefferson County Fair each summer).
Here is a map of Jefferson County, Ohio. On it you can see the general locations of a few of the parks mentioned above, as well as the cities and towns noted further up on my web page.

When I was young our family visited Sally Buffalo Park in Cadiz Ohio, but it's been a L-O-N-G time since I've been there. The web site is still worth a look, even with the cheesy music they have playing in the background.  Our family also did a little bit of camping at Pymatuning State Park, but that's probably been close to 25 years ago now.

Our FAVORITE place to camp growing up was at Twin Valley campground near Carrollton, Ohio. This is where my best memories of camping as a child all come from.

In October of 2002, I returned to another camping location from my youth at Salt Fork State Park, near Cambridge, Ohio. I pitched the tent on a Sunday night and around 10:30 on Monday morning I had a nasty bicycle accident which left me badly injured and unable to do pretty much anything for myself for the next two weeks plus. Great way to spend my only vacation from work in about 15 months!  :-(

The Ohio Division of Wildlife has a web site with information on a number of wildlife topics. Their Wild Ohio Magazine is published quarterly. You can get a free subscription by calling 1-800-WILDLIFE. This is just one of many publications offered by the Ohio Division of Wildlife, so visit the web site to see if any others happen to interest you.

You'll also want to visit the Discover Ohio for other places to visit in this fine state.

Although I was born and raised in Steubenville, and I spent over three years in Toledo, I now live and work in Sandusky, a town in Northern Ohio on Lake Erie.  Here are a few sites devoted to that part of Ohio.

If you are a theme park or roller coaster freak, you've certainly heard of Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio.

Huron, Ohio is a Great Lake Place.  I lived in Huron briefly while I was learning my way around this area.  It's a lovely small community and a Great Lake place!

The Thomas Edison Birthplace Museum is located in nearby Milan, Ohio.

Historic Lyme Village is located near Sandusky, Ohio outside of Bellevue.

Seneca Caverns, Ohio are located near Flat Rock, Ohio; just south of Bellevue.

Here are a few other area web sites; some locations are in Erie County and some are not, but all are in the surrounding counties which make up North Central Ohio.

Finally, somewhere in between the River and rolling hills of Steubenville and the Lake and flatlands of Sandusky you will find Amish country.

Ohio's Amish Country Guide is a complete resource for travel and tourism through Ohio's Amish Country. The site features many area stores, businesses and popular attractions.

Amish Heartland claims to be the ultimate source of information about the Amish way of life and Ohio's Amish Heartland. Check it out and see if you agree.
